Wisdom learned from a pastor about spiritual low
Went to Sunday Service and had a chat with Pastor N yesterday. He shared the story of Elijah and taught me something inspiring about spiritual low. I don’t know whether this kind of experience is very common. But there is a type of spiritual low we would experience not after failure, rather, after something looks victorious (or at least successful) and appears to lead to spiritual height.
Elijah is an example. After Elijah defeating 450 prophets of Baals, it is very reasonable to expect a glorious moment to come. However, he was then persecuted by Jezebel, the princess. And he had to flee. In extreme exhaustion, he even asked God to take away his life. But God sent him an angel to provide food and water, and the angel told him to “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” (1 Kings 19:7)
“Rest, and eat well. These are spiritual things to do. For the body and the spirit influences each other. Have rest, and stay consistently in Him. I believe He will renew you.” Pastor N concluded his sharing after praying for me.
The line between stay faithful in Him and striving on our own can be very subtle and tricky. Sometimes the actions can be the same, but it’s more about the mentality inside us. But what I learned so deeply in the past two weeks is that, DON’T STRIVE on our own means. It’s not going to bring us anywhere except frustration. Instead, constantly spend time with Jesus, ask Him to search our heart and reveal the issues lingering in us, and ask for rest and strength in Him, who always contends for us. Also, even in all-time-low, just immerse in worship. Real communion with Him would bring living water carries the power of healing and restoration. Surrender in Him, for it maximises the room for Him to work. He who is more than willing and able to move in hearts of faith and obedience.
