Got a chance today to catch up with a Christian friend whose spiritual life is much maturer than me, and we had a nice sharing time. We haven't seen each other for some time, and probably won't be able to meet in a while.
"Let's keep in touch through text or email, and let me know if anything comes up. I would love to hear from you!" She said. At the same time, she also made me understand the beauty of simplicity in making ourselves available.
As believers, sometimes we may strive to reach out to people, and may think of many ways of doing ministries. "How much time should we pour out", "How could we talk more eloquently", "How to bring up the topics of faith yet not look like awkwardly", etc. While I believe the pursuit of excellence in ministries is something important, there may be times we overlook the beauty and the power of simplicity.
A few simple words to show our availability and willingness to share the burden can be equally powerful. Even if the person end up does not reach out to us, they would at least know that they're not alone on this journey, or in whatever battle they're fighting for.
After all, ministry is not something we toil by our own means. More than the words we say and the things we do, it's our closeness with Jesus that allows His presence and love be manifested in and through our life.
