Public intellectual 公共の知識人

Talked with a good friend who's also a graduate student. Although we are working on totally different fields, we both agreed that being a public intellectual certainly enriches one's academic life. It is also an obligation to contribute to the society. "Public intellectual" is a controversial term, but we cannot think of other replacement at this point. X sometimes feels frustrated for the power of individuals is so fragile. The influences of state apparatus is just inestimable. X asked me lots about Hong Kong and current Taiwan issue. But I could only offer shallow viewpoints because of my ignorance.

Despite of the lack of satisfying answer, if there is ever one, the conversation was so enjoyable. We plan to do some more on that, by go through some readings thematically, with our personal observations, experiences, and probably contemporary social issues and historical origins. Looking so much forward!

今日、大学生の友達とたくさん話した。研究の趣味は違うけど、私たちは公共の知識人になることが大切と思っている。それは、学問的な仕事を強化しそうだ。それから、知識人の社会に義務だ。「知識人」の定義は議論になる言葉だけど、他の言葉を考えられない。そうの友人は個々の社会に影響は弱くて、国家装置がとても強いと思っているから、よく挫折感がある。そして、私にたくさんの香港と最近の台湾の問題を聞いた。でも、私は無知なので、答えがあまりよくなかった。

いい答えがいつかあったら、私の満足な答えがなかったが、楽しくて意味ありげな会話だった。実は、私たちはもっとことをするつもり。例えば、小さいのグループをしたり、関連した読み物を読んだり、いろいろ社会の問題を話したりする。論議のトピックは読み物だけじゃない、私たちの観測も、自分の経験も、最近のニュースも、歴史の起源も話せる。楽しみにしている！
